Mmorpgs have gone away from this entirely and skills need to return in a big way. Age of Conan had dialogue trees but they looped and gave no real choice.
Star Wars: The Old Republic looks to have some choices on the horizon which excites me greatly. The rest have been static quests with static rewards. Having skill choices and reward variance adds replayability and excitement to the most basic quest line.
It would be another step toward bringing mmos alive.
I remember when there was no quest logs and you had to remember the things NPCs said. You didn't know half the time whether the NPC was seriously telling you to do something or whether he just felt like sharing about his wife being kidnapped by trolls.
